JOB DESCRIPTION: The Fishery Scientist will initially be responsible for research on steelhead kelt reconditioning in the Snake River (i.e., a post-spawner that my return to spawn again in a subsequent year). Restoration of depleted Columbia River steelhead runs under the Endangered Species Act can take advantage of their unique life history trait to spawn multiple times. Presently in the mid-Columbia, a project is underway which involves reconditioning kelts via induced feeding, diet, and nutrient treatments. Additionally, studies of relative reproductive success are ongoing. The Fisheries Scientist will take leadership and responsibility of implementing kelt reconditioning in the Snake River. The long-term study will evaluate kelt steelhead management strategies and implement the most promising approach.

JOB DESCRIPTION: The position is associated with the Fishery Science Department's Production and Restoration Research Group. This group is now engaged in conservation genetics research of salmon, steelhead, and sturgeon. The Conservation Geneticist position is based at the Hagerman Fish Culture Experiment Station located in Hagerman, ID. Through a Memorandum of Agreement, the University of Idaho and CRITFC have established a collaborative research program to address fish culture, fish health, genetics, fish production, and supplemental propagation issues. The employee will work under the Lead Geneticist, in association with other geneticists and technicians at the Hagerman lab, as well as staff of the Fishery Science Department in Portland, OR. Efforts will focus on molecular techniques to address conservation genetics, intra/inter-specific phylogenetics, and expression of functional genes.
